Country Arts Support Program Now Open

Western Riverina Arts was proud to deliver two Country Arts Support Program (CASP) workshops this month with facilitator Jason Richardson. The sessions in Narrandera and Griffith were well attended and provided invaluable insights into building strong, competitive grant applications. Drawing on his experience as both an assessor and a successful applicant, Jason shared practical advice that will help community groups, councils and not-for-profits take their ideas from concept to funded projects.

For those unable to attend, Western Riverina Arts will soon release a publicly available recording of the workshops, ensuring that the information can benefit the wider arts community.
Applications for CASP 2025 are now open and close on Monday 27 October. This small grants program, funded by Create NSW and managed locally by Western Riverina Arts, supports community-driven arts and cultural activities across Griffith, Leeton, Narrandera and Murrumbidgee. Grants of up to $3,000 are available to assist with workshops, events, new works, equipment and more.

Western Riverina Arts encourages all eligible groups to connect with the team early to discuss project ideas and begin the application process.
Full details and guidelines are available on our website.

Traces of Everyday: Participants Embrace Cyanotype and Printmaking

The Traces of Everyday workshop with artist Luciana Pedro brought together a full house at the Narrandera Arts and Community Centre in August. Participants spent the day exploring cyanotype and printmaking, experimenting with sunlight, local flora, and relief carving to create unique works that reflected their surroundings.

For many attendees, it was the first time trying these techniques. The excitement of discovering something new was evident throughout the day, with feedback highlighting the sense of connection, curiosity, and creativity sparked by the processes. Each participant left with original works in hand and a shared experience of making together.

Luciana reflected that this was both the largest group and longest-running workshop she has facilitated to date, noting the energy and enthusiasm of the participants made the event particularly memorable.

The workshop was described by attendees as a rewarding opportunity to step outside their routine, engage with new ideas, and embrace the simple but powerful act of tracing the everyday.

Western Riverina Arts is proud to have presented this workshop, which offered such a meaningful opportunity for our community to create and connect.

Western Riverina Arts Celebrates the Life and Work of Veronica Collins

Western Riverina Arts is proud to have supported a special exhibition and commemoration honouring the late Wiradjuri artist, Veronica Collins (1962–2022). Situated outside Griffith Regional Theatre, Ms Collins’ remarkable mural, Charcoal Reign, continues to inspire the community and stands as a vibrant testament to her cultural heritage and artistic vision.

On Monday 15 September, Ms Collins’ family, together with Griffith City Council Mayor Doug Curran, unveiled a plaque commemorating her contributions to the arts. This event coincided with the opening of a retrospective exhibition of Ms Collins’ work in the Theatre foyer’s “Artspace” Gallery, which will remain on display until Friday, 3rd of October 2025.

Curated by Griffith Regional Art Gallery Coordinator Melanie Toscan in collaboration with Ms Collins’ family, the exhibition spans her early acrylic-on-canvas works through to her later explorations in print-making, textiles, mixed media, and natural materials. Her art addresses cultural, historical, and socio-political themes, celebrating the unceded sovereignty of First Nations People and amplifying her powerful artistic voice.

Western Riverina Arts is honoured to support this project alongside the Charles’ Family, Griffith Regional Art Gallery, and Griffith Regional Theatre. We encourage the community to visit the exhibition and experience the enduring legacy of Veronica Collins’ extraordinary career.

Exhibition Dates: 15 September – 3 October 2025

Australian Ballet Duet
From The Gadhu

From The Gadhu” is a captivating First Nations-led creation performed by The Australian Ballet Education and Outreach team. Inspired by the profound cultural symbolism of whale migration, this 20-minute contemporary duet delves into themes of care for Country, intergenerational knowledge sharing, and the delicate balance of ecosystemic symbiosis.

This performance is specially created for school and community settings, aiming to illuminate the deep relationships that First Nations people share with the land, oceans and its ecosystems.

When the character of Mischief Maker disregards the wisdom of the Lore Keeper, the impact of this disharmony is echoed through the movements, music and costumes crafted to educate and inspire young minds.

Music by Tristan Field (Walbunja, Bidjigal, and Sri Lankan), choreography by Ella Havelka (Wiradjuri), and artwork by Latoya Brown (Krauatungalung, Djiringanj, Walbunja, and Bidjigal), add depth and authenticity to this modern adaptation of a narrative that has been passed down by Bidjigal and Darrawhal people for thousands of years.

Following the huge successes of Beauty and the Beast (2015), Wicked (2017), Legally Blonde (2019) and The Wedding Singer (2023), we’re proud to announce our upcoming 2025 community production of Mamma Mia!

About Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia is a romantic comedy, contrasting the dreams and aspirations of a 70s girls and a 90s girl. Through the storytelling magic of the songs of ABBA, we meet Donna, a feisty, independent single parent, who doesn’t need a man to make her life complete; and her twenty-year-old daughter Sophie, who wants romance, babies and a big, white wedding. If only her father could give her away…

If only her mother could tell her who her father is…

A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!

RANSW Quick Response Grants

Quick Response Grants are available on a monthly basis from February to November, with all applications being competitively assessed at the end of each month. The grant amounts vary, with individuals able to apply for up to $3000 and organisations up to $5000, though there is no minimum grant amount. It’s important to note that there is a limited funding pool, so accurate budgeting is crucial to ensure you are only applying for the amount you truly need.

These grants are designed to assist with urgent needs that may arise unexpectedly and are not covered by other funding rounds. This includes opportunities such as professional development, skills development, and small projects that require immediate attention.

Projects funded by the Quick Response Grants must begin within 2–12 weeks of the closing date of the round in which the application is made. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their applications no later than 5 business days after the end of each month’s assessment.

Year of the Novel Scholarships 2026

Writing NSW is proud to announce that applications are now open for three scholarships for the 2026 Year of the Novel program: one for a First Nations writer, one for a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) writer, and one for a Young Writer under 30. The Young Writer Scholarship is presented with the generous support of Dr Bruce McCabe.

The Year of the Novel 2026 scholarships aim to improve representation in the writing community by amplifying voices that are often marginalised. Each scholarship provides a fully funded place in the 2026 intake of this highly regarded program.

Year of the Novel is designed to offer emerging writers structured, long-term support. More than just a course, it fosters a strong sense of creative community and gives participants a rare chance to focus deeply on developing a manuscript—guided by expert tuition and peer support—over the course of a year.

The program has sold out annually for nearly a decade and has helped launch the careers of authors including Zaheda Ghani, Nardi Simpson, Amy Lovat, Natasha Rai, Kavita Bedford, Christine Sykes and Clare Fletcher. With a proven track record of guiding writers from draft to publication-ready, Year of the Novel is a trusted pathway for emerging talent.

These scholarships offer a powerful opportunity for three emerging writers to take the next step in their creative careers with the support of this acclaimed program.
The CaLD scholarship will be judged by Shankari Chandran, and the First Nations scholarship will be judged by John Morrissey.

To apply, you will need to tell us why this opportunity matters to you, share a little about your writing experience and achievements to date, and outline the novel idea you’d like to develop during Year of the Novel 2026.

For more information and to apply visit the Writing NSW website

Applications close midnight on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
