Regional Collaboration at the RADO All-Staff Summit
In late July, Western Riverina Arts joined colleagues from across the state for the 2025 Regional Arts Development Organisations (RADO) All-Staff Summit in Sydney. Held at the historic Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, the two-day gathering provided an opportunity for our network to connect, learn, and align on shared priorities.
WRA Executive Director Aanya Whitehead and Creative Officer Elijah Ingram attended in person, while Communications Officer Zooey Korhonen joined online. Sessions covered topics from HR systems and advocacy updates to regional touring strategies and project management. One standout discussion was the role of artificial intelligence in the arts, which has sparked ongoing discussions in the network.
Time was also spent on the critical issue of arts advocacy, sharing ideas and strategies to push back against recent funding cuts and ensure regional voices remain heard. Western Riverina Arts remains committed to this work, and we left the summit energised and determined to keep championing arts and culture in our region.

Lunch Society Continues to Impress
Griffith Regional Art Gallery’s Lunch Society series continues to offer valuable opportunities for the community to engage with contemporary exhibitions in a relaxed and welcoming format. Western Riverina Arts Communications Officer Zooey Korhonen attended the recent session centred on ARTEXPRESS, which featured a floor talk by Gallery Coordinator Melanie Toscan.
The exhibition presents a curated selection of exemplary works by 2024 HSC Visual Arts students, highlighting the diversity and innovation of the next generation of artists. Attendees were given a deeper insight into the selection process and artistic themes explored, with many noting the originality and technical skill on display.
Several exhibiting students have visited the gallery in person, including one with a personal family connection to the region. It was a meaningful reminder of the reach and relevance of regional cultural institutions.
Western Riverina Arts encourages community members to consider attending the next Lunch Society session on Friday, 5 September, which will feature The Art Mill: All In This Together. Floor talk commences at 12:15 pm. Details are available via Griffith Regional Art Gallery’s website and social media channels.

Western Riverina Arts - Upcoming Workshops
Western Riverina Arts is bringing a new round of workshops to our region this September, supporting arts and culture practitioners in Narrandera and Griffith.
The Country Arts Support Program (CASP) workshops are especially timely, offering valuable insight ahead of the 2025 program opening later this year. Led by artist and former CASP assessor Jason Richardson, these sessions are an ideal first step for those intending to apply. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how the program works. These workshops are not only an opportunity to strengthen your application. It is also a great way to connect early and ensure your project idea is on the radar.
Also in Narrandera, artist Luciana Pedro will deliver a hands-on creative workshop exploring cyanotype and printmaking, encouraging participants to engage with their surroundings through texture, memory and reflection.
All sessions are free, and we would love to see them booked out. More details—including session times and registration links—are available via the Events and Exhibitions section of this newsletter, on our website, or through our Humanitix page.

Murrumbidgee Short Story Competition 2025 – Open Now
The Murrumbidgee Short Story Competition has officially opened for 2025, inviting writers across the Western Riverina to share their stories once again. Now in its fifth year, the competition has become a cornerstone event for regional storytelling and creative development.
Entry is free and open to residents of Griffith, Leeton, Narrandera and Murrumbidgee council areas. Writers of all ages are encouraged to submit original work in fiction or non-fiction, with no restrictions on genre. Each submission is judged blind, and every entry is read and considered carefully by our panel.
Over the years, the competition has unearthed incredible talent. Past winners have gone on to publish their work, appear at national literary events, and strengthen their confidence as regional storytellers. As in previous years, participants can request personalised feedback, ensuring the competition continues to support skill development alongside the chance to be recognised. For many, this competition has been a first step into something more.
Western Riverina Arts also welcomes expressions of interest from those who would like to sponsor a prize, the community celebration, or otherwise support this growing initiative.
Full entry details and submission forms are available at www.westrivarts.com.au. Entries close midnight Friday, 19 September.

Following the huge successes of Beauty and the Beast (2015), Wicked (2017), Legally Blonde (2019) and The Wedding Singer (2023), we’re proud to announce our upcoming 2025 community production of Mamma Mia!
About Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia is a romantic comedy, contrasting the dreams and aspirations of a 70s girls and a 90s girl. If only her father could give her away…
If only her mother could tell her who her father is…
A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!
