Mid-Year Momentum – Speaking Up for Regional Arts
As we pass the midpoint of 2025, Western Riverina Arts remains focused on advocating for the health and future of our region’s creative communities. The past few months have presented significant challenges to the sector, with substantial cuts to Create NSW’s multi-year funding program impacting organisations across regional NSW. These outcomes have placed additional pressure on already under-resourced communities and artists.
Our Executive Director, Aanya Whitehead, joined voices across the state in calling out the impact of these cuts. “The arts are not a luxury—they are central to health, connection, and community strength,” she said. Regional arts organisations provide meaningful cultural, social, and economic benefits to the communities they serve, often with limited staff and modest budgets. The full media release is available on our website, and we encourage everyone to continue the conversation by sharing your stories and using the hashtags #ArtsAdvocacy and #RegionalArtsAdvocacy.
At WRA, we are continuing to do what we do best: support and amplify the voices of our region’s artists, creatives, and cultural groups. As we head into the second half of the year, there is plenty to look forward to.
Next month, we will launch the 2025 Murrumbidgee Short Story Competition, celebrating the voices and storytelling talent of our region. Alongside the competition, we are welcoming Expressions of Interest from local businesses, arts and cultural organisations, and philanthropic supporters interested in sponsoring this heavily engaged competition. If that sounds like you, or someone you know, please get in touch.
We are also pleased to announce that this September, we will host Country Arts Support Program (CASP) grant workshops in Narrandera and Griffith. These sessions, presented by regional arts leader Jason Richardson, are designed to support local creative groups and not-for-profit organisations with their applications and project planning ahead of the 2025 funding round opening later this year.
And that is not all, we have more artist development workshops and collaborative programs planned for the months ahead. We are not slowing down. Thank you for walking alongside us as we continue to advocate, create, and connect. If you have ideas, projects, or events in the pipeline, we would love to hear from you.

Roy Orbinson at Griffith Regional Theatre
Experience the wonder of Roy Orbison in this brilliant theatrical portrayal of the man, his music, his voice, & his life.
You will find yourself believing you are in his presence, transported back in time, reliving the emotion of each of his songs & the stories of his life.
Mark Shelley is simply brilliant in his characterisation of Roy. He not only has the vocal range & tone to honour his songs, he also has the sensitivity & artistic ability to ‘be’ Roy.
Without doubt, this is the definitive portrayal of Roy Orbison – the man, his music & his life.

1984 at Griffith Regional Theatre
By George Orwell. Adapted by shake & stir.
Big Brother is back.
Strap in for an electrifying take on the George Orwell classic – from the multi-award winning creative minds at Shake and Stir (Frankenstein, GRIMM, Jane Eyre, Animal Farm and Dracula).
It was a bright cold day, and the clocks were striking thirteen…
Winston Smith, an editor at the Ministry of Truth, sits quietly. A quick swig of gin; a glance of quiet optimism toward the telescreen. Winston opens his diary, puts pen to paper, and in doing so, commits the essential crime that contains all others in itself. A radical and unprecedented act of rebellion.
Discovered, entrapped, and incarcerated in the Ministry of Love, Winston, in defending his burning desire for personal freedom, prepares for the fight of his life. Can the oppressive forces of The Party, led by BIG BROTHER, obliterate the indomitable human spirit?
And what exactly awaits within Room 101?

Following the huge successes of Beauty and the Beast (2015), Wicked (2017), Legally Blonde (2019) and The Wedding Singer (2023), we’re proud to announce our upcoming 2025 community production of Mamma Mia!
About Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia is a romantic comedy, contrasting the dreams and aspirations of a 70s girls and a 90s girl. Through the storytelling magic of the songs of ABBA, we meet Donna, a feisty, independent single parent, who doesn’t need a man to make her life complete; and her twenty-year-old daughter Sophie, who wants romance, babies and a big, white wedding. If only her father could give her away…
If only her mother could tell her who her father is…
A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!

You have probably seen it: surreal AI-generated cats in Victorian costumes or entire novels written in seconds. But where do artists stand in all this? I am personally guilty of following a lot of Instagram pages of AI created content of cats. But should we as artists use or support AI? Ethically, should we even do so?

- Performance at significant contemporary music industry events by artists and acts performing new and original contemporary music
- Professional development opportunities including attendance at events, workshops, camps, mentorships and residencies.
Funding can support up to six people per touring party. This includes the artists and a maximum of two people with roles that support the artists to undertake the tour. These support roles include:
- One operational crew member (e.g. tour manager or key technical production crew)
- One support person for people with disability, family or cultural needs.
Sound NSW may consider supporting travel and accommodation costs for more than six people for larger groups or those with additional support needs. Please speak to Sound NSW staff for further advice.

Opportunities and Workshops from Regional Arts NSW (RANSW)
Applications for Regional Arts Fund (RAF) Project Grants will officially open from 9am on July 1, 2025 for projects starting in the next calendar year (2026).
The Project Grants will fund high-quality arts projects benefitting regional or remote artists, arts workers, audiences and communities. The focus of the project could include any area of creative practice, multiple art forms or cross-disciplinary practice.
There have been some changes to this program, so please take time to read the guidelines.
Regional Arts Fund Project Grants will close on Friday, 15 August 2025 at midnight.
Quick Response Grants
Quick Response Grants are available on a monthly basis from February to November, with all applications being competitively assessed at the end of each month. The grant amounts vary, with individuals able to apply for up to $3000 and organisations up to $5000, though there is no minimum grant amount. It’s important to note that there is a limited funding pool, so accurate budgeting is crucial to ensure you are only applying for the amount you truly need.
These grants are designed to assist with urgent needs that may arise unexpectedly and are not covered by other funding rounds. This includes opportunities such as professional development, skills development, and small projects that require immediate attention.
Projects funded by the Quick Response Grants must begin within 2–12 weeks of the closing date of the round in which the application is made. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their applications no later than 5 business days after the end of each month’s assessment.
