Creative Rights Roadshow in Griffith

Western Riverina Arts was proud to partner on the Your Creative Rights Roadshow in Griffith on 15 May—a free professional development day for Aboriginal artists, arts workers, and those working alongside First Nations creatives and communities.

Led by respected legal expert Suzanne Derry, the Roadshow delivered tailored workshops on the legal rights and responsibilities of artists and the organisations that engage them. The Griffith stop was part of a broader initiative from the Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance to build legal literacy and confidence across regional New South Wales.

Held at Griffith Regional Art Gallery against the vibrant backdrop of Bazaar: The Couture Collection, the day included discussions on copyright, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), and practical case studies. Attendees engaged in breakout sessions and walked away feeling better equipped to navigate the legal landscape of creative practice.

Feedback from the ARAA team praised the local arts community’s strong turnout and thoughtful participation. Organisations have already begun applying what they learned, and artists reported a clearer understanding of their rights.

WRA Travels to the Far West

In May, Western Riverina Arts Executive Director Aanya Whitehead and Creative Officer Elijah Ingram spent a week in Broken Hill, hosted by our Regional Arts Development Organisation (RADO) colleagues at West Darling Arts. The visit was a valuable opportunity to connect across regions, deepen collaborative ties between RADOs, and experience the cultural landscape of the Far West firsthand.

A major focus of the trip was capturing oral histories from locals keen to share their stories. “Being able to listen to locals tell their story their way was a highlight for me. Some of our oral history participants came with a set idea of what they thought they were going to talk about, but ended up diving deep into their history and connection to their communities,” said Elijah.

The team also explored a number of arts and cultural spaces in Broken Hill and surrounds, including the Line of Lode Miners Memorial, Silverton’s iconic Mad Max Museum, and several local galleries. They travelled further afield to Menindee and Wilcannia, engaging with artists, crafters, and community members. Insights gained from these remote communities will inform ongoing conversations around access, connection, and sustainability in regional arts practice.

Fire Beneath the Wax: Sharon De Valentin’s Solo Exhibition Opens at Leeton Museum and Art Gallery

On 24 May, Western Riverina Arts Communications Officer Zooey Korhonen attended the official opening of Fire Beneath the Wax, a new solo exhibition by encaustic artist Sharon De Valentin at Leeton Museum and Art Gallery.

Sharon’s work draws on the ancient technique of encaustic painting—layering molten beeswax, resin and pigment to create richly textured surfaces and sculptural forms. Through these materials, she explores themes of memory, ecology, and transformation. During the launch, Sharon spoke with warmth and clarity about her process, inviting questions and encouraging discussion. Her talk sparked curiosity and connection, giving guests a deeper appreciation of the works on display.

It was a beautiful afternoon of conversation and contemplation. Guests were observed quietly gravitating towards their favourite pieces, each work inviting personal connection. We were especially pleased to witness several sales on the day—no doubt those pieces will find pride of place in homes and offices around the region.

Fire Beneath the Wax runs until 28 June. Drop into LMAG to see it for yourself—and perhaps pick out a piece to take home.

The Coal Miners Daughter at Griffith Regional Theatre

The Story of Loretta Lynn & Friends

Coal Miner’s Daughter celebrates the incredible life of the late great Loretta Lynn, from her early days in the hills of Kentucky to her tempestuous marriage, tragic losses and enduring bonds with such luminaries as Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, across a stellar career, till her final send off to country music heaven in October 2022.

Audiences will be captivated by the masterful storytelling, performances and catalogue of hits. This is a show not to be missed and with the recent passing of the great Loretta Lynn, there is no better time to celebrate her music.

In floor length gowns adorned with tassels and rhinestones, with hair as close to country music heaven as possible, where country music started and still should be, in the theatre, just like the Grand Ole Opry and it’s coming to Griffith Regional Theatre!

The Queen's Nanny at Griffith Regional Theatre

By Melanie Tait. Directed by Priscilla Jackman.

Inspired by historical events, a royal scandal ignites a blistering fire between the steely Queen Mother and her children’s doting nanny in Melanie Tait’s sparkling new comedy drama.

Marion ‘Crawfie’ Crawford adored her job as governess to Princesses Lilibet and Margaret Rose… until she was ostracised without warning, despite dedicating the best part of her life to raising, educating and caring for the young royals. The reason? A tell-all memoir.
From the creative team behind the sell-out success of THE APPLETON LADIES’ POTATO RACE, this blackly funny play imagines a series of pivotal moments between two strong-spirited women harbouring complicated resentment.
