Calling All Indigenous Artists - We want YOU!
Western Riverina Arts and Griffith Regional Art Gallery are inviting expressions of interest from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to be part of an exciting new project for 2017, Deep Waters - Warangesda Marramarra.
The project is a key part of Deep Waters – Reflections and Recollections from Warangesda Mission -a partnership between the two arts organisations, National Parks and Wildlife Services and key Indigenous community stakeholders and Wiradjuri Elders, to commemorate the significance of Warangesda mission in the lives of generations of Aboriginal people.
The main activities for the project will be group weekend workshops in different media conducted in early 2017, both on and off the Warangesda site. Times and dates to be advised. Participants will work as a group to create new work, guided by invited leading Aboriginal artists. Aboriginal artists who work or are prepared to work in a variety of mediums are being sought to participate.
Warangesda Maramara follows the hugely successful Murrumbidgee Maramara exhibition in 2016, and will allow Aboriginal artists to explore and express their responses to the old Warangesda Mission site at Darlington Point, through a series of curated workshops, on-site installations and an exhibition of works at Griffith Regional Art Gallery during NAIDOC week in 2017.
Regional Development Officer Derek Motion says “We are seeking expressions of interest from Aboriginal artists working in any medium, who are interested in working collaboratively and being part of these workshops. The aim of the project is to celebrate the culture and creativity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in the region, and to develop new skills.”
GRAG Coordinator Ray Wholohan said, ‘We saw earlier this year that the Western Riverina is home to some amazing Indigenous artists. This new project will once again present the best of their works in a major regional art gallery, showcasing it to the wider community, and it will also challenge artists to produce new work responding to an important local site”.
Any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists interested in being involved in these group workshops should get in touch with the project organisers directly to express interest, as soon as possible.
