Our March artist of the month is Coleambally/Darlington Point artist Sophie Chauncy. Sophie has exhibited extensively within the Riverina, studied art at the National Art School in Sydney, and is currently finishing her Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of Wollongong where she looks to complete her Honours.

She combines many mediums and techniques including the use of traditional drawing with intuitive mark making, water colours, pastels, pens and acrylics to create vibrant contemporary works. Living on a farm in her formative years has shaped her practice, drawing inspiration from the natural surrounds of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, her work reveals a strong influence of bush landscapes and a fascination with Australian wildlife conservation.

Sophie says “I want to reveal both the energy and beauty of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area specifically and rural Australia more broadly, its landscapes, habitats and in particular the wildlife, as well as show its condition of critical even terminal change. My interest has been to paint and document the living systems of this land – flocks of birds, gum trees by the river, the endangered bittern making habitats in the crops and the dynamic movement and flow of water through rivers and water systems, and how they inherently contribute to the dynamics of Australian ecosystems.”

Sophie’s works are currently on display at Griffith Regional Art Gallery through the Artspace exhibition. Her exhibition runs until March 30. Sophie’s gorgeous works can also be viewed on her Facebook page and her Instagram account where you can get in touch for custom commissions.
