A Life in Craft: A Celebration of Local Artist Joyce Spencer

Local artist and maker, Joyce Spencer, will have a retrospective exhibition at the Narrandera Arts Centre from 5 - 10 December. There will be a special opening on Sunday 4 December from 2pm - 4pm and all are welcome to attend.

The exhibition has been curated to celebrate the life and work of Narrandera resident Joyce Spencer, who has been a prolific maker her entire life. At 88 years of age, she is still creating with great enthusiasm and is an active Narrandera Arts and Creative Network member. Throughout her life, Joyce has been experimenting and pushing techniques to create work in weaving, ceramics, folk art, decorative painting, mosaics, metalwork and sculpture. This exhibition will highlight a selection of the immense work Joyce has produced.

As well as creating new artworks, Joyce has written five books in the Milner Craft Series, with ‘Folk Art Cards’ a best seller. ‘The Art of Teaching Craft’, co-written with Deborah O’Brien, was published internationally and became another influential book in craft circles.

Joyce is extremely generous with her talents, encouraging others and sharing her skills. As friend and writing partner Deborah O’Brien has said, “Joyce’s enthusiasm for life and art is infectious. That’s what makes her such an outstanding teacher. She is the consummate mentor, both talented and generous of spirit. In fact, passing on the traditions and techniques is as important to Joyce as creating her own artworks.”

Along with Joyce’s exhibition in the Arts Centre, there will be another exhibition in the adjacent gallery. ‘Our Infinite Imprint’, was created by members of the Friendship Circle; Doreen Angrove, Layla Bacayo, Julie Briggs, Victoria Dyer, Kathleen Foster, Marilyn Manning, Sarah McEwan, Vic McEwan, Josie Middleton, Lindee Russell, Joyce Spencer and Tim Wilson. Their exhibition explores the relationship between humans, nature and animals.

Support your local artists by stopping in and having a look at two great locally produced exhibitions, open from Monday 5 December to Saturday 10 December, 10am - 4pm.
