Joyce Spencer Textile Fellowship

Textile artist R.R. (Rose) Pascoe from Portland was the 2023 recipient of the Joyce Spencer Textile Fellowship. The Fellowship has enabled Pascoe to develop and present a new body of work 'Digital Tactility', recently exhibited at The Annexe, Portland.  Known for her exquisite hand-sculpted wearable art garments, Pascoe has responded to progressive physical barriers to her arts practice by embracing digitally aided production and design, in a way that maintains the hand, and the senses, at the core of the process. The works presented in 'Digital Tactility' are a marriage of the digitally fabricated and meticulously handmade.
“Rose Pascoe ventures into unknown fibrous realms with the ability of an engineer, the eye of an architect, and boldness of an innovator.  She reveals a new world of looms and sound where each piece demands its space as a sculptural presence.” Said Executive Director, Western Riverina Arts, Aanya Whitehead, who attended the exhibition in Portland.
The Joyce Spencer Textile Awards are to support regional NSW textile artists or collectives to deliver new artworks or exhibitions. Named after the textile artist Joyce Spencer (1928 – 2019), the awards are made possible with funds from the Spencer family and Western Riverina Arts, in partnership with the Cad Factory.
Round 4 EOIs for the Joyce Spencer Textile Fellowship open on 1 May 2024 and close on 2 June 2024 and regional NSW textile artists are invited to apply.

'Work of Art' Update - by Participating Artist Sharon de Valentin

'Work of Art' is a 17 month developmental project by Regional Arts NSW (RANSW), funded by Women NSW and supported by Western Riverina Arts.  It is designed to help develop skills, strategies, confidence and connection for regional artists. I was honoured to be accepted into the program.
The tuition from Creative Plus Business CEO Monica Davidson and the coordination of the NSW Regional Arts team is phenomenal.  We have worked through finance, communications and marketing, setting goals, peer coaching, prioritising workloads, action learning sets and building confidence.
I have also started mentoring sessions with Lismore artist Penny Evans, a practitioner in ceramics, collage and mixed media on paper.  All the artists will co-design an industry event for November in which people come together in a regional location to talk, share practice and celebrate the achievements of the Work of Art participants.

Artist of the Month - Sonia (Paula) Undy
Wiradjuri woman Sonia Undy is a Western Riverina artist, conducting a traditional weaving practice from her home studio in Griffith, NSW. For Sonia her weaving practice is anchored in culture, in family and in community.  Though she is a multi-disciplinary artist, Sonia says that the revival and regeneration of traditional weaving practice leads to conversations, healing, and the sharing of family and community stories – both ancient and new.

“For girls and women, weaving circles provide a safe place to learn culture, to talk things out and learn a skill.” Sonia said.
Sonia says that to be able to concentrate, create and work with colours and materials as they come allows her to express emotion and create works of beauty. Sonia grew up in Griffith and Darlington Point, walking and learning with her grandmother, who shared stories of her own childhood at Warangesda.  As a daughter, mother, and grandmother now Sonia wants to ensure that connections to culture and heritage are held strong and available for future generations.

“Both my grandmother and mother were single-minded that we be proud of our heritage and our culture. My mother studied at university and brought that determination back to her work in schools, building understanding and knowledge with kids and with staff.  People stop to talk to Mum in the street now to tell her how important she was to them during their school years, and to thank her for the work that she did to make them feel safe and to listen to them. Her work was outside school too, I can remember visiting elders with Mum with her tape recorder, recording family stories and knowledge.”
Sonia finds weaving to be a strong place for her and a way to find great calm during difficult times. She concentrates on wall hangings and baskets in traditional cultural weaving techniques, marrying colours and textiles in the moment, and often allowing the piece to draw her work along in certain directions.

Sonia generously shares her knowledge and practice through forums and in person, attending and teaching weaving techniques at regional festivals and events,  such as the Warangesda Festival and the 2023 Cocoparra Corroboree. In 2023 she led the online weaving circle 'We Weave Together' for the Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance event 'Here Now & Always' - a global showcasing of Aboriginal Arts and Culture from New South Wales hosted as an annual program of activities and an online festival program and art market.

She is currently one of several Wiradjuri artists working in partnership with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to heighten awareness of Wiradjuri culture at Cocoparra National Park which is a significant cultural site, through updated signage and language throughout the park.

Amidst family and work Sonia hopes to find more time and opportunities to develop her own weaving practice and to teach and share the skill.
