MAY WRAP-UP

The Rescue of Riverina Native Birds touring exhibition begun at the historic Willows Homestead in Jerilderie. Western Riverina Arts and South West Arts held a joint opening event to celebrate the 40+ works made by over 20 individual artists and groups. The exhibition had a fantastic response from the local community and is now on display at The Hive Narrandera.

Congratulations Ros Lockhart Art on the opening of Her Story at Leeton Museum and Gallery. This exhibition shines a light on females with connections to the Leeton and Jerilderie regions, and shares their unique stories. You will recognise some familiar faces such as Helen Dalton MP, Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Cr Ruth McRae (and even staff from Western Riverina Arts)! This exhibition is heading for Jerilderie next - stay tuned for more details.

The Narrungdera Earth Fest was a three-day festival honouring and celebrating the Wiradjuri peoples of Narrungdera (Narrandera), their culture and practices, with a focus on Aboriginal music, dance and indigenous flavours. Check out Narrandera Shire Council and Narrandera Tourism Facebook pages for event photos and wrap-up.

In May Projects & Communications Officer Camille Whitehead and Board Member Suesann Vos travelled to Brisbane to attend the Art of (Donor) Influence Masterclass with Tammy Zonker, bringing new philanthropic fundraising insights back to our region.

Are you passionate about your local community? Western Riverina Arts has two openings for board members. WRA is seeking a Murrumbidgee Community Representative and a Narrandera Community Representative

As a newly elected board member you will be part of the governance of WRA and representing our four LGA regions of Griffith, Leeton, Murrumbidgee and Narrandera. As an active board member, the Executive Director will be relying on your expertise and representation in your communities and will seek your combined and/or individual advice and feedback related to both the broader region and your own communities. Representatives must be 18+.

Permanent Wiradjuri Exhibition Funded 

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Arts, and Regional Youth Ben Franklin, visited Leeton to announce the recipients of the 2022/2023 Local Government Authorities (LGA) Arts and Cultural Projects Funding. This included $100,000 for a new permanent exhibition, "By Virtue of Water: A Leeton Wiradjuri Story' at Leeton Museum and Gallery. Minister Franklin said “This year has seen a real focus on First Nations arts and culture. Local councils from across Sydney, Western Sydney and regional NSW such as here in Leeton, are putting their best foot forward to deliver unique and diverse experiences." Elijah and William Ingram are two local Wiradjuri men who are involved in delivering this new project at LMAG: read more here.

Rescue of Riverina Native Birds Exhibition
8 June to 4 July | The Hive, 68 East Street Narrandera

NEW OPENING TIMES: Wed - Fri 10am - 4pm, Sat 10am-12noon.
Artists from across the region have been selected to take part in a group exhibition that raises awareness about the endangered Plains Wanderer, Australasian Bittern, Mallee-Fowl and their habitats. Visitors will be able to learn about the conservation and management which is integral to the species recovery.

Artists include: Jan Lawler, Miranda Brett, Josephine Duffy, Hape Kiddle, Cory McKenzie, Allan McKenzie Snr, Michael Lyons, Sophie Chauncy, Sharon De Valentin, The Spot Gallery Hay, Kerri Weymouth, Samantha Davies, Robyn Davis, Sarah Allen, Bernard Higgins, Jason Richardson, Finley Art Network, Linzie Joanne and David Booth (Ghostpatrol).
Park Celebrations for NAIDOC 2022
6 July | Marie Bashir Park, Narrandera

A jam-packed day full of fun for everyone. This year Narrungdera NAIDOC Celebrations and Events will be holding a mixed touch carnival for the old and the young! Everyone is welcome to participate and win some prizes. There will be food available, face painting for the kids, painting activities, live entertainment and market stalls. If you are a business that is interested in running a stall, please contact the event organisers via Facebook messenger.

Bloodshed at the Banquet
7PM 9 July | Yanco Agricultural Institute 

Join us at the reception for the British Empire tour, but be warned… all is not as it seems… you may experience bloodshed at the banquet. Guests will enjoy a set menu with an audience immersion experience delivered through a local amateur melodrama production featuring live jazz music. Please dress up in your finest Art Deco themed garb!

Harp Deco
7PM 8 July | 21 Chelmsford Place Leeton

The Art Deco movement was a period of luxury, glamour, and exuberance, marked by dramatic architecture and bold geometric forms. The musical soundscape was changing also: from the beautiful classical forms of Pachelbel and Glinka, through to something different and more dramatic.

Hilary Manning, performing on her Art Deco harp, will present a musical journey of the Art Deco period, showcasing the change from impressionism to thunder in the 20th century. There are limited places available for this event.

Gatsby Cabaret Soiree

Put on your dancing shoes and let us transport you to our world of sophistication, glitz and glamour... this is The Gatsby Cabaret Soirée.
They didn’t call it the Roaring Twenties for nothing and when you meet the Gatsby family, you’ll understand why! Decadent cocktails, show-stopping acrobatics, dancing and vocals, this will be a night to remember! Tickets are limited to this 18+ late night entertainment featuring The Gatsby Girls, The Wild Tonics and Calligraphy Circus.
Street Photography Exhibition
8-10 July | Leeton Museum and Gallery

Before the days of Instagram, personal cameras, copyright and privacy laws, street photographers were a familiar part of city streets during the 1930’s to the late 1950’s, inadvertently creating a vast archive of black-and-white, postcard-sized candid images. Developed in collaboration with nationally acclaimed photomedia artist Anne Zahalka, this exhibition explores the heyday of this once popular but now forgotten genre.
Tutankhamun Roadshow
8-10 July | Next to Leeton Museum and Gallery

The Tutankhamun (Tut) Roadshow comes to Leeton. Bringing the wonders of Egypt back to Leeton, the 2019 crowd favourite is BACK for the 2022 Australian Art Deco Festival, Leeton. This is a unique experience not to be missed.
Containing three theatrettes, the Tut Roadshow takes visitors on a journey through Ancient Egypt. Significant discoveries are explored, and visitors learn about the continued importance archaeology plays in our understanding of cultures, their struggles, and their impact on today. Located alongside the Leeton Museum and Gallery, this all-ages exhibit has FREE entry throughout the 2022 Australian Art Deco Festival, Leeton.
Electro Swiggety

You’re invited to Electro Swiggety’s Gatsby party! Flappers and Dappers, get those dancing shoes ready! Tickets are limited so get in quick! Electro Swiggety will take you back to the 1920's, a time of wild dancing, hot jazz, prohibition, secret nightclubs, mob gangsters, and more. There will be prizes for the best dressed, so put on your best flapper dress or gangster suit and dress to impress, as you step through the doors of the Parlour and enter the 1920s.

Grass Roots Under 30's Open Mic Competition
31 July | Griffith Regional Theatre

Perform at the Open Mic on Sunday 31 July for a chance to win one of three fantastic prizes:

• The Best Original Song winner get their music produced with a recording session at The Cad Factory, including a mixed and mastered finished song, valued at $800.
• The ADITO Award winner will open at A Day in the Orchard (ADITO) festival on Sunday 9 October, and get paid $500 for their ADITO performance.
• The Judges’ Choice winner will receive a ticket to the Sound Workshop with Hilary Geddes and Niki Johnson, as part of the Speaking Place workshops by ADITO at Piccolo Family Farm on Saturday 8th October.

Grass Roots Songwriting & Performance Workshop
3 July | Burley Griffin Room at Griffith Regional Theatre

An afternoon of interactive seminars supporting the artists’ approaches to songwriting and offering tips for performance delivery. This workshop facilitated by Grass Roots founder and judge Ben Ceccato, Co-judge Bonnie Owen, Grass Roots alumni Jorja Dalton and local performer Shari Blumer.

While not a pre-requisite to enter the competition, the workshop aims to support emerging musicians in their journey to the stage for the Open Mic competition on Sunday 31st July. Artists are encouraged to bring their instruments and even their own original works to be developed during the session, to build the skills and confidence to perform on stage.
Hilary Geddes Quartet ‘Parkside’ Tour
21 June | Piccolo Family Farm

Recipient of Australia’s most prestigious jazz award in 2021, The Freedman Jazz Fellowship, Hilary Geddes leads a quartet comprised of Sydney’s new generation of jazz stars. Featuring the stellar Maximillian Alduca (double bass), Alexander Inman-Hislop (drums) and Matt Harris (piano), the quartet is beautifully synchronized to create unique sonic landscapes – expansive and uplifting music that echoes the likes of Bill Frisell and Ry Cooder. Hilary Geddes Quartet “Parkside” tour will be presented in Piccolo Family Farm’s spectacular Cellar Door and Visitor Experience Centre. Tickets include canapés by Limone Dining. 

This project is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, Create NSW and the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government Initiative.
On Thin Ice
Ends 19 June | Griffith Regional Art Gallery

Developed in close collaboration with participants, On Thin Ice tells the stories of people who are living with or recovering from addiction to crystal methamphetamine (ice) through photography, sculpture, printmaking, audio recordings and the written word. This project was commissioned by Tuggeranong Arts Centre (TAC) in 2019 in collaboration with journalist and author Ginger Gorman.
OPPORTUNITIES
Burning Seed Art Grants

Burning Seed is an experimental gathering held at Matong State Forest dedicated to creativity, collaboration and a cash-free community. Artists are encouraged to bring art installations to Burning Seed, which they can register here. There is also funding available specific to local Riverina residents who are interested in making art for Burning Seed. Generally ARTery looks to fund installations that are stand alone, sculptural installations that are independent of specific performances or activities, although these may accompany the installation.

International Art Textile Biennale

Fibre Arts Australia is calling for entries to the International Art Textile Biennale 2023. ​The International Art Textile Biennale (IATB) seeks to exhibit the best of contemporary art textiles and invites submissions, from Australia and Internationally, that reflect a wide range of works related to the textile medium. Total prize monies AU$15,000. Entries close 17/08/2022.  

NSW Museum Strategy Survey

Create NSW is seeking input from individuals and organisations involved in the NSW Museum and Heritage sector via the NSW Museum Strategy Survey. The data gathered from this survey will directly influence the development of the NSW Museum Strategy to be delivered by Create NSW. The survey is now live and will close on Friday 24 June 2022.

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize

The Pro Hart Outback Art Prize is an acquisitive competition showcasing work in any media which reflects the spirit and diversity of the Australian Outback. The prize consists of an Acquisitive First Prize, a Non-Acquisitive Second Prize and a People’s Choice Award with a total prize pool of $23,000. Entries close 11 August.

The Basil Sellers Art Prize 

The Basil Sellers Art Prize is a biennial competition celebrating and awarding artistic excellence and creative practice and offers a prize pool of over $30,000. In 2022 the prize is poised to become a nationwide prize with a new direction for the latest evolution and an increased major prize of $25,000. All entries must be received by Friday 29 July 2022.

joanne burns Microlit Award 

This award seeks submissions of microfiction or prose poems, up to 200 words, which reflect on some form or aspect of play – whether playful ideas, language or behaviour. Spineless Wonders will offer publication to the winner and finalists in its annual anthology. Submissions due by midnight, August 28, 2022.

The Lester Prize

The Lester Prize is one of the country’s premier art prizes—an award that places artists and community proudly front-and-centre with a $100,000+ prize pool.  "Our prize is about the advancement of the artists, not the celebrity of the sitters." Call for Entries closes 17 June 2022.

Strengthening Rural Communities – Rebuilding Rural Communities

The Rebuilding Regional Communities stream runs in parallel with the Bushfire Recovery and Small & Vital streams within the flagship Strengthening Rural Communities program. Thanks to the Australian Government, funding is available in remote, rural and regional areas in all States and Territories. A total of $5 million will be provided nationally from 2022 to 2024 through two funding tiers:

Event Saver Program

The purpose of Event Saver is to provide financial support to organisers of Major Events scheduled to be held between Wednesday 15 December 2021 and Saturday 31 December 2022 where an event is cancelled or Significantly disrupted as a direct result of Public Health Orders (PHO).

Major Events have been targeted for support due to the significant impact these events have on driving tourism as well as on the broader NSW economy. Find out more.

Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award

This annual acquisitive award and exhibition is organised by the Art Collection and Galleries Unit at Deakin University. One outstanding work will be awarded $10,000 and become part of the Deakin University Art Collection. The winner will be announced at the opening of a six week exhibition of finalists' works. Entries close 1 July.

Music Industry Review Survey

In late 2021, the music industry came together to launch the Music Industry Review. The review will identify key issues facing the industry and determine what needs to be done to create positive and sustainable change. If you work in the music industry, you can lend your voice to reform by completing this survey. It’ll take you about 10+ minutes. Complete the anonymous and confidential survey by 20 June.

#Sunflowerquiltforukraine Project Call Out

Janno McLaughlin is a regional artist based in Scone who has set herself the task of creating a quilt as big as a house to deliver to the Ukrainian embassy in London then on to Ukraine to be wrapped Christo-like around a significant landmark. People all over Australia (and the world) are asked to send in a 30 x 30 cm block, based on the themes of sunflowers, hope, optimism, and peace. Project ends 30 June, find out more.

The Long Lede Initiative

The Long Lede Initiative is a mentoring program aimed at pairing 10 aspiring writers with 10 seasoned mentors to develop a piece of longform factual writing, 5000 words in length. At the end of the process, mentees will have the opportunity to publish their 5000-word piece in a Penguin Random House anthology. By participating in the program, mentees will develop the skills, contacts and confidence to forge ahead with their longform portfolio. Apply before 30 June.

Paper Artist Wants To Recreate Your Home

Locals from regional NSW are being asked to send photos of their homes for an art project as part of Regional Futures! Blayney paper artist Laura Baker has been commissioned by Arts OutWest

The Samstag Scholarship will send you to a leading international art school of your choice. Applications for 2023 travel close 30 June 2022.

National Capital Art Prize

National Capital Art Prize is a not-for-profit company established in Canberra in March 2021. Managed by honorary Directors, the company supports and showcases Australian artists and celebrates their skill and diversity through an annual national painting competition. Open category offers a $15,000 prize, First Nations category offers a $15,000 prize and Sustainability category offers a $15,000 prize. Entries close on 30th June 2022.

Meroogal Women’s Art Prize

Sydney Living Museums is excited to announce that entries are now open for the 2022 Meroogal Women’s Art Prize, with a prize pool of over $10,000. Female artists from across NSW are invited to submit works, in any medium, that respond to the historic house of Meroogal, its former occupants, and its meaning within broader historical and contemporary contexts.

Naomi Williams Wiradjuri Poetry Prize 2022

The Naomi Williams Poetry Prize is named in honour of Nay who was a strong, proud Wiradjuri woman from the Brungle/Tumut area of NSW. Nay loved to write poetry about the river, her family and all the elements of love that she treasured. This poetry prize aims to support other Wiradjuri writers and encourage more poetry about life in Wiradjuri country. Entries close 17 June.
