MARCH WRAP-UP

Two Points of View exhibition at Leeton Museum and Gallery brought together the works from artists Anne Morshead and Jan Thompson. The opening event resulted in a fabulous afternoon with many eager art collectors in attendance, 40% of the works available were sold. Congratulations Anne and Jan!

Dr Treahna Hamm: Story-telling through textiles was on display at Griffith Regional Art Gallery.
Hamm's artworks are composed with multiple layers of storytelling garnered from her Yorta Yorta upbringing. This project has been supported by the Joyce Spencer Fellowship, with the assistance of the Spencer family, The Cad Factory, Western Riverina Arts and Create NSW.

Encompassing the work of three talented women, Natalie Power, Robyn Hutchinson and Edie Rudd, the feminine gaze of Places and Space(s) exhibition at Leeton Museum and Gallery was emotional, intimate and highly relational. WRA board member Julie Briggs reflected on the opening performance: "I enjoyed so much this mesmerizing and powerful performance “Where you Belong” by E.L Elliot AKA Natalie Power." Jake Speer returned to Leeton for the 'Inside Film' workshop with Riverina Writing House. Jake delved into film-making, script writing, behind-the-scenes on the set, and discussions on the ways to tell uniquely Riverina stories. This event was supported by Western Riverina Arts.

Kathryn Little's exhibition 'Finding Joy' was held at the Narrandera Arts & Community Centre. For the duration of the exhibition, Kathryn donated 20% of art sales to the relief efforts for the Australian floods and war in Ukraine. This exhibition is one of eleven being delivered by Narrandera Arts & Creative Network (NACNet) this year as part of their WideOpen 2022 Program.

Local jeweller Kristy-Lee Agresta has launched a new collection of fine jewellery hand-made in the heart of Griffith. The collection is titled California Dreamin' and Kristy-Lee says "It's based on that feeling of freedom, an ode to a simpler time before Covid and dreaming of your next big adventure!"

Artists Selected For State-Wide Project

Two local artists have been selected to participate in the state-wide Regional Futures project. The Western Riverina Arts Regional Futures Mentorship sought applications from young artists between 16 and 25 and a mentor artist of their choice. Emerging young Wiradjuri artist Jacob Charles will work with Griffith based sculptor and jeweller Hape Kiddle to develop his skills and expand his future in this field.

Regional Futures is a two-year creative project funded by Create NSW and delivered by the NSW Regional Arts Network which represents 15 members organisations that support and promote artists and creative practice across regional NSW. At the heart of the project is collaboration across sectors bringing artists and other experts together, exploring the future of the regions. The artists will participate in a ten-week self-directed creative development program that will involve weekly online sessions with various thought leaders and studio visits from the project's Artistic Director.

Regional Futures will culminate with the showcasing in Sydney of new works developed as part of the project.

The Hive Narrandera - The Riverina's Newest Gallery Opens

Meet Melissa Horrell, the visionary behind Narrandera’s newest gallery. The Hive Narrandera is a hub of creativity, bringing together an art gallery, retail space and opportunities for creative classes.

The completely renovated building provides a refreshing new space for Riverina artists to display their work: “I’m new to the area. This is my third year in Narrandera and I have seen so many talented people! My idea was to have an art gallery in the front, because it is such a big space and showcase local, regional and rural New South Wales art.”

Melissa specialises in upcycling and furniture painting workshops but will also be offering other art forms at The Hive such as floral arranging, paint & sips and weaving. She hopes these workshops will make creativity more accessible for locals: “What I’ve found is that a lot of people from Narrandera can’t always get to Wagga or Griffith, Coolamon or Junee.”

Artists currently on display include Kate Marshall, Leila Constable and Sally Steele. Visit the gallery Wednesday through to Friday, 10am – 4pm to see the latest works.

Artists and people with queries regarding workshops and venue hire can reach out to Melissa via email on thehivenarrandera@gmail.com or visit 68 East Street, Narrandera.

Flood Recovery Support Northern Rivers

Our thoughts are with our colleagues at Arts Northern Rivers and the creative communities severely affected by the recurring floods. There is an open call for flood recovery support: Donations can be made here. Lismore resident and Executive Director of Arts Northern Rivers Jane Fuller spoke of the devastation to community radio station 2SER-FM.

"The creative sector across the entire region has collectively suffered untold losses: galleries losing entire collections, studios, equipment, and artworks in ruin, and livelihoods in freefall. Along with this, Arts Northern Rivers also have completely lost their office to the floods. Unfortunately, like many across the region, the not-for-profit organisation is not insured for floods. With insurance premiums beginning at $30,000 per annum, this is simply an unattainable cost for most across the arts sector.

With a core value of advocacy, Arts Northern Rivers has already reached out to the region's colleagues and peers to begin the task of tracking the scale of the damages. These damages are rising into the 10’s of millions in building and infrastructure alone including; Lismore Regional Gallery, The Northern Rivers Conservatorium, Lismore City Hall (NORPA), M-Arts (Murwillumbah), Byron School of Art, Spaghetti Circus, and so many more. What is extremely prevalent is the magnitude of loss for the region’s independents, which, with the highest concentration of creatives outside a metro area numbering into the hundreds, are suffering greatly, and it will take months if not years to come through this."

Treahna brought her own life and upbringing into conversation with Joyce's life in this new work. Treahna resonated with Joyce as they both have a shared love of creativity, joy in making, teaching to support communities and strength within family bonds. As a result, the centrepiece of the exhibition is a stunning possum skin cloak to honour Joyce and her life.

This exhibition is part of 'Wide Open 2022' developed by Narrandera Arts and Creative Network to showcase a series of exhibitions throughout the year at the Narrandera Arts and Community Centre, promoting local artists and experiences.
