FEBRUARY WRAP-UP
Artist Roslyn Lockhart talked us through some of the meanings present in what could be described as Jerilderie’s (or Australia’s) best hidden art gem. ‘Yo-thun-ing-yuna Ngarratya’ (Coming Together) is a 8x4m painting by Barundji/Barkindji artists Elsie Black, Gertrude Gittins, Eileen Ballangarry and Sos Hawkins.
It is thought to be the largest traditional Aboriginal dot painting in the world! The painting hung in Parliament House during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

This work needs to be seen in real life to be truly appreciated. It currently resides at the Murrumbidgee Council Chambers in Jerilderie and is available to view by appointment - call 03 5886 1200
Artist Melanie Baulch is starting a subcommittee of the Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists in Wagga. The club's aim is "To facilitate and promote the knowledge of natural history, and to encourage the preservation and protection of the Australian natural environment..." Its members include many skilled artists and photographers. Contact Melanie on  melaniebaulch@bigpond.com

What does a Bunyip look like? Kerri Weymouth, Local Producer for The CAD Factory, and artist Julie Montgarrett have been running workshops in Darlington Point to explore this idea in creative ways. Participants dreamt up ideas of what a Bunyip might look like and made wild brushes. The outcomes of the workshops will be exhibited later on in the year as a part of future projects.

We dropped in on the Leeton Art Society Inc first Tuesday Morning Casual Art gathering for the year, at the Leeton Multipurpose Community Centre. Have a cuppa and a chat while you get creative - It's on every Tuesday morning from 9.30am, and night sessions are on from 6.30pm.
Darlington Point artist and filmaker Vince Bucello has produced a film about the Fivebough Wetlands for the Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists in conjunction with Leeton Shire Council. Keep an eye out on his Facebook or website for its release.
If you couldn't make it to the Cad Factory 2020 Program Launch, their program is now available to view online. Exporting our local artists overseas, activating public spaces in innovative ways, VR technology programs exploring politics and gender, solar panel building workshops, new fellowships for textile artists - lots to look forward to in 2020!
ARTIST OF THE MONTH

SOPHIE CHAUNCY

Our March artist of the month is Coleambally/Darlington Point artist Sophie Chauncy. Sophie has exhibited extensively within the Riverina, studied art at the National Art School in Sydney, and is currently finishing her Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of Wollongong where she looks to complete her Honours.

She combines many mediums and techniques including the use of traditional drawing with intuitive mark making, water colours, pastels, pens and acrylics to create vibrant contemporary works. Living on a farm in her formative years has shaped her practice, drawing inspiration from the natural surrounds of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, her work reveals a strong influence of bush landscapes and a fascination with Australian wildlife conservation.

Sophie says I want to reveal both the energy and beauty of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area specifically and rural Australia more broadly, its landscapes, habitats and in particular the wildlife, as well as show its condition of critical even terminal change. My interest has been to paint and document the living systems of this land – flocks of birds, gum trees by the river, the endangered bittern making habitats in the crops and the dynamic movement and flow of water through rivers and water systems, and how they inherently contribute to the dynamics of Australian ecosystems.”

Sophie’s works are currently on display at Griffith Regional Art Gallery through the Artspace exhibition. Her exhibition runs until March 30. Sophie’s gorgeous works can also be viewed on her Facebook page and her Instagram account where you can get in touch for custom commissions.

Western Riverina Arts acknowledges that our rural communities are currently facing challenging times. During this crisis we’ve witnessed amazing and charitable deeds by Australians who have volunteered their time, effort, belongings and services. In the same spirit, we would like to reach out to any artists, and arts organisations, who have been affected by the bushfires.

Please contact us if you need extra resources, promotion of charitable activities or assistance with the Quick Response Grants via Regional Arts NSW for creative recovery projects in areas that have been impacted by the fires.
